Visit to the Rose & Crown

with Stuart McGregor

Nestled amidst the towering structures of Southpoint and Emporium Hotel in South Brisbane, The Rose & Crown beckons with its charming blend of history and hearty fare. As venue for this month’s BABBS committee meeting, it promised traditional English delights and ales fit to challenge any beer enthusiast’s palate.

Walking into The Rose & Crown feels like stepping into a time warp, albeit a tastefully updated one with a Queensland twist. Housed in a 19th-century Queenslander with lace iron balconies, ornate fretwork, and original fireplaces, the pub exudes old-world charm. The use of symbols in its name, “Rose & Crown,” harks back to a time when such imagery helped illiterate patrons find their way; thankfully, I generally only become illiterate when I’m leaving such an establishment!

Couple of pints of hand pulled beer!

Ah, the elixir of committee productivity; the beer selection did not disappoint. With traditional hand pump ales on tap, the bar staff’s arms got a workout as we enthusiastically sampled their offerings. From bitters to stouts, each pint was poured with precision and served with a side of friendly banter. The menu boasts classics like Guinness pie, cured fish pate with toast, and mussels that could make a seafarer sing. However, the star of the show for many was the Scotch Eggs, crispy on the outside, perfectly runny on the inside, and more satisfying than a perfectly executed brew day.

“Brown sauce, don’t forget the brown sauce!” – Liam

The Rose & Crown isn’t just a pub, it’s a celebration of English culinary heritage and conviviality. Whether you’re navigating the complexities of committee decisions or simply seeking a taste of history in a glass, this place delivers.
